Tuula Hirvonen
Tuula Hirvonen
Tuula Hirvonen was born in Finland.
She studied architecture in Germany, where she worked as an architect for about ten years, completing more than fifty individual projects across Europe. A designer and multimedia artist, she has worked in the visual arts since 1983, the year of her first solo exhibition in London. In painting, she favours watercolour, a technique that suits her sensibility and allows for a refined style even in the smallest details.
True to her creative vision, she produces exclusive, limited collections and is open to commissions. For her large-scale works, she uses acrylic on canvas.
Since 2003, she has been a member of the Comité National Monégasque de l’Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques auprès de l’UNESCO in Monaco. Since 2005, she has been an active member of the ARTECONTEMPORANEA group in Bergamo, exploring new approaches including Murano mosaics, fully three-dimensional slate sculpture and lost-wax bronze casting.
Since 2006, she has been art director of the bimonthly art and culture magazine TELEXART. In 2006, together with Giacinto Formentini, she invented the SCISTOGRAFICA technique, applying it directly to her works on Ligurian slate from the Argentina Valley and on tar paper.
In 2007, she co-founded the first school in Civezza, in the province of Imperia, dedicated to fully three-dimensional Ligurian slate sculpture and scistografia applied to slate, teaching alongside Giacinto Formentini.
