Pino Settanni
Pino Settanni
Pino Settanni, “a Roman from Puglia”, as he liked to describe himself, was a photographer who was difficult to fit into a traditional category. In pure photography, he is known for his portraits of famous people, his “Ritratti in Nero”, and the series “Tarocchi”, “Zodiaco” and “Vizi Capitali”.
“L’Alfabeto dei Francesi a Roma” was his first museum commission, from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
Equally well known are his graphic and painterly works, begun thirty years earlier with the “Voligrammi” series, or flight diagrams, and continued from 1995 with “Archeologia del Futuro”. In this series, he combined painting and photography to imagine how photographic prints might be discovered in a distant future.
In 2001, Settanni turned to digital technology, revisiting and reworking new photographs and images selected from his extensive archive in Photoshop.
He held numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his work appeared in many of the world’s leading newspapers.
Pino Settanni died on 31 August 2010. He worked until his last day to ensure that his final work, “SUD SIMBOLI SGUARDI”, could be published.
His works are on permanent display at the Musée Français de la Carte à Jouer in Issy-les-Moulineaux, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo. The Pino Settanni Photography Museum has been open since 2015 in the beautiful setting of Matera.
