What type of printing do you prefer?

My absolute favorite print for exhibitions, collections, and portfolios, with the advent of digital, is fine art inkjet printing with Hahnemuhle paper.

For the rest of the work, a bit of all the current typologies based on the needs of the client or the end user.

What comes first, the idea or the fascination with the material? In other words, does the artistic/photographic project come first, or are you inspired by the techniques and particular processes that strike your attention?

For the artistic part, the idea is essential as an initial input.

The print material has always adapted in quality, visual impact or size to the concrete realization previously pre-visualized by the artist.

Do you have any Masters you look up to and feel close to?

In these very days, during the forced break due to COVID-19, I’ve rediscovered the time and joy of browsing through the many photography books in my library. These have always been my mentors.

As book authors I would mention > Will Mac Braide, Jeff Cowen, Herbert List, Mary Ellen Mark.

His project “Who I am” made me think of all the images that the great writer Bruce Chatwin left us following his travels to the ends of the earth.

Chatwin, the well-known author of “Patagonia” (1977), used photography as a narrative tool, just like writing, shooting with his inseparable Leica which was indispensable to him to visually portray the places and people he wrote about.

“Who I am” has the form and structure of a travel notebook built through images, which lays the foundations not for a written narrative, unlike Chatwin, but for a series of memories that will be shared.

Can you tell me more about this project?

“Who I am” is a personal project created in 2015 in conjunction with the “Around the world” itinerary of 7milamiglialontano.

I think the key idea was to take one portrait a day, for 40 days, contextualizing it in their environment and thus telling, in just a few images, the almost intimate story of each of the subjects. Random subjects, with chance encounters.

To explain myself better, I will report the text of the journalist Flavio Alagia who followed me during the realization of the project which subsequently materialized in a book written specifically for this purpose:

In every glance there is a story to be discovered, in every wrinkled smile the tale of a distant youth, a life of joys and sorrows crystallized in a handshake or a pair of suspicious eyes. In every encounter there is a fragment to be added to that formidable mosaic that is the world we move through. And this is our journey, a series of invasions into the lives of those who open a window onto the reality of which they are a part. Fleeting traveling companions who become the instrument through which we embrace the world. With every dream confessed, with every pain shared, the distance between us and them narrows, disappears, and we journey within each other, all explorers of an unresolved humanity.

Future projects?

Many, perhaps too many!

The most important is the H2oPLANET project of www.7mml.world of which I am the creator and promoter.

Have a good trip, with your head and with your heart… ALWAYS.
